Fasting
The Connection of Fasting and Prayer
The mention of prayer and fasting is found throughout the scriptures – in both the New and Old Testament.
In Psalm 35:13, David writes: Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. And again in Ezra 8:21 the fast was used in a time of need for God’s protection. When people faced important issues and needed God’s intervention, the fast helped them focus on their dependence on God and calling out to God for His power, protection and provision.
Jesus and Fasting
In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus spoke about fasting: When you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. In this passage, Jesus is encouraging people to fast with the right motives.
What Fasting Is
Simply, fasting is abstaining from something, usually food – either entirely or partially. Fasting may include refraining from other things such as the media (television, cell phones, texting, etc.), sports, dating, etc. However, throughout scripture fasting was related to food.
In the spiritual context, fasting is used to humble ourselves before God. Fasting helps us have a greater sensitivity toward God, and calls attention to our dependence on God to meet our needs. Fasting also draws us into a closer intimacy with Him.
Ways to Fast
- Some people may choose a “Total Fast” and consume no liquids or food.
- Many people utilize the “Liquid Fast” and drink only water and/or juices.
- Often people may eliminate certain meals throughout the week, or rotate giving up certain meals. For example, a person may choose to give up desserts for a limited or extended period of time.
