Just a week ago, I had the experience of a lifetime. Well, all “experiences of a lifetime” are not necessarily good.

Monday morning, I woke up with an incredible pain in my side and knew immediately that it was a different sort of pain. I suspected kidney stones, and the doctor confirmed that a few hours later. For a whole week I suffered, highly medicated almost beyond comprehension, and I tried my best to function but to no avail. The fact is, I was in some intense pain! But I also realized I have a lot of friends! Some of you reading this blog have had kidney stones, and know exactly what I’m talking about. I’ve heard it said by a number of people since that time that its more painful than delivering a baby. (Thank goodness men don’t have to go through childbirth…that would bring the world as we know it to extinction!)

Fortunately, through the help of a wonderful doctor and a blessing from the Lord, I was able to pass that on Saturday and be at church on Sunday. It was wonderful to have a super team to be able to lead in my inadequacy! Kudos to those leaders!

I began to think about how feeble and fragile the human body is. Something as small as a sesame seed can actually take a person down! It’s really made me be so much more appreciative of good health.

I received quite a few texts and emails…one of which was Ike Reighard (an evangelist) who said “Carl, I’ve had kidney stones, and I’ll be praying for you. But just remember, He rolled the stone away!” Hahaha!

So you’ll see me around the office drinking a little less coffee, not as many cokes, and downing a lot more water and cranberry juice.

I look forward to seeing you this week! Remember to praise Him! Don’t let the rocks cry out!

This past Sunday I had a sort of epiphany of sorts during “Man Church”. I was standing on stage, listening to the people on stage and in the audience cry out to God in worship. Just to hear our people praise the Lord loudly is just amazing to me!

In the course of worship from time to time, I see the faces of people. It always amazes me at what God reveals in his children’s faces, especially during worship. So many people out there with hurts and needs, and yet you can see in their face that they’re laying it all before His throne…trusting in Him alone. “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.”

We were singing the lyrics “the same power that conquered the grave lives in me….”, when I glanced at the people sitting on the front row in our congregation. I was taken back when I realized that the same power that conquered the grave lives in me….and in the inmate that was praising God for his salvation. And it lives in the grateful family that is now reunited after being torn apart for months. And it lives in the single mother, battling cancer, crying out to God while holding her little girl’s hand, knowing that she is completely dependent on God now. All these people, you guessed it, were on the front row. All these people were eager to experience God’s presence in worship.

Despite their current circumstance, or their difficult past, they have decided to lift surrender themselves to Him. But not only worship Him…worship Him on the front row with hands lifted high!

Isn’t it amazing how dependant on God we become during times of troubles and trials? I thought about how much I would love to have that kind of dependence without having the issue or situation. It made me realize that I need to strive to be on the front row, not because I’m close to the action of the room, but because I want to give God all I have at worship each and every day. I want Him to know that my desire is to be as close to Him as I can get.

The challenge really is: whether you’re going through a difficult time, or you’re on top of a mountain, always worship God. Don’t casually look through a window from outside, but seek to be a part of the family from the inside. That is where you gain His perspective.

This past week I had the opportunity of a lifetime….well, actually, it was an incredible reality check in my life. So here’s what happened…

I sent my family to Florida, which consisted of my wife and three children just before Memorial Day Weekend. At the same time, my oldest son went to Kenya for 2 weeks on a mission trip. The family members who were away were having the time of their life…going to the beach everyday and enjoying the Florida sun was a well-deserved vacation/time away for them.

(Lauren giving her cousin a kiss…guess this is a new meaning on “kissing cousins”)

And Carl Brown’s experience in Kenya was just epic, as is any time that you are able to give part of yourself away. (I can’t wait to hear how this is impacting his life…again!)

(Carl Brown with a Kenyan child)

The one thing I learned during these 2 weeks (that seemed like an eternity) is this…I was NEVER meant to be single! I realized how important my immediate family is and how much I really rely on my wife and children. Coming home every afternoon to a quiet house (when normally 7 are there) was an incredible shock to my system!

It didn’t help that John Nick didn’t want to do a whole lot, but I did convince him to go to the Coca-Cola 600! We had a great time! We got to sit at the Nos section of the speedway, and coming off the elevator they were giving away free Nos. John Nick, being the extrovert he is, told them how much he loved their product and how he wished he could have a whole case. Sure enough, they gave him a whole case! If you’ve ever been to the Nascar speedway in Charlotte, you’ll realize that the walk to your car is longer than the track itself (especially when you’re lugging around a case of Nos)! Needless to say, we were worn out, but it was a great chance for dad and son to be together, which is a rarity with our busy schedules.

Today as I write this blog, the last family member is coming back home. I love having my family home. I love the noise of a happy home. Maybe that’s what God meant when He said “make a joyful noise unto the Lord…serve Him with gladness”.

This past weekend I had the unique privilege of a lifetime...actually a dream come true - one of the top things on my bucket list was realized. You might think it would be sky diving or being gifted with Super Bowl Tickets (which is on my list too), but it was something far more valuable than these experienced based events. Since I have been in Asheville, I have always desired to meet Dr. Billy Graham face-to-face. And you guessed it!!! I did!

I was invited to lead worship for a small group (25 or so) handpicked businessmen from around the nation at the Cove. To kick off the weekend, Dr. Graham, George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows were to be with us and talk about their ministries and field some questions from the men. Just to be a fly on the wall would have been enough for me...seriously!!!

Cliff Barrows, Dr. Billy Graham, and George Beverly Shea

Thirty minutes before the start, Cliff Barrows, the worship leader for Billy Graham, came into the empty room and just made me feel right at home. He remembered coming to our church a few years ago for Global Focus, which was amazing to me...I can't remember what happened yesterday! We sang and talked for 15 minutes or so until Bev Shea, the featured soloist for the crusades, came into the room via a wheelchair in his usual fun loving, loud and jovial way. He is 101 now, but can still sing like you would not believe. I knelt down next to him and reminded him that he was to come to our church a few years back but couldn't because of a sudden illness. (This was a surprise for our church that no one ever knew about!) He in turn reminded me that it was just over six years ago...WOW what a mind.

Me and Cliff Barrows

I had met and spent some time with these men in the past and that would have been totally enough....but the moment I had waited for was just about to unfold. Dr. Graham was wheeled in the room and again there were just 4-5 others in there at the time. I walked over to him. David Bruce, his personal assistant and church member, asked me if I had met Dr. Graham and then introduced me. The time I had been anticipating was occurring. I, of course, had no wisdom or profound words but a fervent respect and awe of a man who has done so much for the kingdom of God. He said to me, "You have a great church and I hear you are doing great things there...I see so much on the television about your church. It is so good to meet you." I can't remember what I said...only the impression that was left...then he was reacquainted with his 2 friends.

Me and George Beverly Shea

For the next hour and a half, I heard the three heroes of our faith (who have been together for 65 years) tell stories and lessons learned for the closed door session...who knows, maybe this would be the last time they would all be together. What I learned in that time is indescribable....thousands would have loved to be in my shoes...and I was honored. Here are a few realizations that God said to me that night:

Be humble

Have fun...be 18 years old in your heart.

Dream big

Integrity is priceless and fragile...guard it.

Keep in touch with friends

Expect great things

Love and cherish your wife...and say it out loud and often!

Love God with all your heart...you will be with Him for a long time.

Die trying...live everyday yielded to God...there is no retirement.

Dr. Graham said this..."I am asking God to give me one more sermon...for the strength to preach just once more." One gentleman asked him, "Dr. Graham, where will you preach this sermon?" To which the weakened Dr. Graham said boldly, "To the world, of course!" May all who come behind us, find us faithful...

This past Sunday you heard a little information about the upcoming renovation our worship center taking place this summer. We currently have around 1,000 more people in our regular worship services than we had last year! It’s exciting to see God moving and drawing people to Himself through the ministries of our church. Our prayer is that we continue to plow the ground and allow more people the opportunity to worship with us..that’s what this project is all about. The fact is that we always have to rethink, always have to make new the provisions that God has given to us. So, I am excited to see that we are a church with a great vision, and we have a pastor with a great vision, so that we will continue to reach our community for Christ until there is no one left to reach!

The neat thing about this renovation is that we’ll be able to make 400+ seats available in our Worship Center! We’ll also have some terraced/raised seating in the back portions of our worship center.

Recommendation From the Leadership Team>>

As with every change, there comes a sacrifice. The only sacrifice here is a little inconvenience through the summer that would yield additional opportunities for our church to be able to reach Asheville. Additionally, we’ll be doing a few technical upgrades, as well as shrinking a little portion of the stage in order to make room for more seats. We’ll also be upgrading the flexibility of on-stage elements and props for our services. Please pray for this renovation this summer, and continue to reach people for Christ. Having The Answer is very important…giving it away is even more important. Let’s continue to reach people for Christ as He continues to bless our church!

In addition to the renovations at the church, I too might need some renovations at my house. We just got a brand new chocolate lab…7 weeks old! She’s chewing everything she can find! She’s crewing the side of the door, my cell phone charger…EVERYTHING! Does anyone have any suggestions??? I need help here!
Hopefully she’ll grow out of it soon! Below is a picture of our brand new addition. We thought 5 kids was enough, but obviously we have one more…our little baby dog. There will be more stories to come (I’m sure) as Choca chews up…I mean grows up…and becomes part of our family.

This past week was full of absolutely wonderful surprises in the life of our church! Clayton King taught in place of Pastor Bruce this past Sunday (as he was out of town at a conference). What I love about Clayton is that he has a very unique way of winning people over for Christ, and his personality makes you feel like you’ve known him your entire life. He really cares and is invested in the life and ministry of our church. He wants to see our church grown. I see him as one of our ministers that we share with a lot of other churches. I appreciate his heart and service, and his willingness to go the extra mile.

I talked with Clayton before the service and he told me that he woke up that morning feeling and knowing that the Holy Spirit was going to do something impactful that day, and man, he wasn’t kidding! We had approximately 150 people make decisions for Christ! I think everyone in attendance this past Sunday was inspired to move to the next level in their Christian walk and to be a part of what God’s doing in Biltmore Baptist Church.

Speaking of which, I’m so stoked about the Love Loud projects from this past weekend! So many people came out into our community to do manual labor in order to show God’s love for Asheville with nothing expected in return. I would encourage each and every one of us to always look for a place of influence in our lives where we can make a difference. It might be a smile. It might be a help. It might be a word. But always look for an opportunity to give. “It is more blessed to give, than to receive.” Many people found that out this past weekend through Love Loud. Let’s Love out Loud every day of our lives!

The onset of spring brings so many different enjoyments… hot dogs, apple pie, baseball….you know all those obvious ones. My son, John Nick, is a freshman this year at Reynolds and recently had the opportunity to play on the varsity baseball team. Just last week while playing arch-rival TC Roberson, he cranked a home run over the left field fence…the highlight of the game for him. Well we lost the game, but the fact is that his confidence was boosted tremendously. I love to see my boys have a passion for something and go after it with all their heart.

I remember playing sports and ball…watching through the fence and being a very good backseat driver/armchair quarterback/wannabe ref and umpire. We always have the best perspective from afar. However when I got on the field, my perspective always changed. The same is true in our walk with Christ, and how we participate in our worship opportunities on Sundays. We have the choice to look at it, or to be a part of it. So many times in worship, people come in as a spectator or onlooker of the experience and not as a participator. My prayer is today, tomorrow, and every day, that Biltmore Baptist Church would be a church of people desiring to seek after God and praise Him, and to not just see it done by others.

I challenge you to be an active part of worshiping the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with a VERY loud voice!
Scripture says “make a joyful noise”….that’s exactly what God has called each one of us to do. So let’s do it loud this Sunday!

This past Easter was an awesome weekend of worship and praise! We have so much to be thankful for! I love the anticipation in the expressions of people on that special weekend.

I especially like the song “Your Great Name “ that we sang for the first time on Easter weekend. It puts things into perspective for me... No matter what condition we find ourselves in, we always know the name of Jesus is strong…stronger than anything we may face.

One of the things I love about Easter is family time. It was so great to be with my family and see our almost 2-year old, Lauren, on her first Easter egg hunt (at least the first one she can remember). My four boys took the vast amount of eggs that we had at home, and literally put them 5 feet apart on a big lawn and watched her move from one to the next. In each one of these eggs we had some special treat, something she discovered very quickly with the very first egg that she found. Inside was a small piece of chocolate candy. I believe now that we’ve created a chocoholic in a little girl. Aren’t all little girls chocoholics anyway?

Needless-to-say, out of the 75-100 eggs that we had, she probably only made her way to about 10 of them since she would take the time to eat the candy inside of each egg she came across before moving on to the next (unlike what my older kids used to do, and even myself…I’d go grab as many eggs as I could find and then eat them later).
It’s just fun to be around kids at Easter.

All this to say that Easter should be a joyous time for us in so many different ways. Let us always learn from the simplicity of a child, knowing that when God gives us blessings, let us not run so quickly by them that we miss them. We all need to take the time to sit and open up the gift and enjoy it, one blessing at a time. I hope you have a blessed week. Let’s live in the strength of our Risen Savior, Jesus!

This past week, my good buddy and Pastor of Administration/CFO, Scott Crawford, was taken to the hospital with gall bladder pancreatitis. It gave me flashbacks of 6 years ago when I had the very same thing. Fortunately the Lord spared me. The memory helps me to realize how thankful I am. At the same time, it caused great concern for Scott during these past few days, and after a bumpy ride and through much prayer and surgery, Scott went home today (April 1st).

Now, everyone knows what April 1st stands for, and everyone that remembers is always on guard wondering what’s going to happen, or how someone is going to be surprised by a prank. I started early this morning tweeting to be on the lookout for jokes, but that didn’t spare me from getting fooled.

I came into the office after seeing Scott in the hospital getting ready to go home. The first clue was that the receptionist gave me a real big smile, which is kind of unusual for a normal day. I walked down the hall, and people waved and smiled. I thought, “wow, everyone’s being really cordial today!”. I got to my office door, and there were about 3 or 4 people gathered in the hall, and 3 or 4 people gathered in Jesse’s office, all of whom were smiling amidst the blaring music being played. When I opened my office door, I was met with one of the biggest obstructions of my life...a massive inflatable from the children’s ministry inside my office.

Needless to say, I am writing this blog from Jesse’s desk as mine is still uninhabitable! So I guess my office can really be a place of ultra creativity with this new addition….hahaha…they got me good here!
I love having jokes!

But in all seriousness, I am so thankful for Scott and his ministry here at our church. I’m also so thankful that he’s back at home resting. It helps me to remember to look behind me and see where God has given me victory, so it will give me confidence and faith in knowing that he will give victory again in the challenges that face us in the days ahead. God is an awesome God! “The same power that conquered the grave lives in me!”

As a new year kicks off, we have a tendency to look at areas of our lives that we need to change or be better in. I’ve done it year after year. With the start of a new year comes the opportunity to begin again, and do things differently than before. It’s a time of refreshment.

For me, and like so many others after the Christmas season, a new year brings the resolution of exercise, better health, and losing a few of those unwanted pounds that seemed to have attracted themselves to me. (My family is a little bit bake-happy during the Christmas season, making over 500 cookies, breads, and candy. We could really start our own Christmas bakery!)

I think we all take a look at our spiritual condition. We see how we can start fresh again with a renewed spirit.

My hope as we begin the “ReStart" sermon series on January 10th is that you might better grasp that our God is a God of second chances, of third chances, of forth chances (I could go on here). Scripture tells us over and over again that He’s able to forgive if we just confess. He wants us to be a new creature in Him! What an amazing thought!

My challenge to you: Don’t just vow to change, but tell someone about your vow! Be accountable and transparent! Having someone else know your commitment helps in keeping you from breaking it. At the end of the year, there seems to be some resolution that wasn’t fulfilled, but my prayer for you for 2010 is that you would be able to fulfill the commitment that God desires for you to make. That you would be better for it...your family would be better for it...that your friends would be better for it. That people would see your commitment, and be drawn to Christ because of YOU!
Have a blessed 2010!

P.S. I want to know what your New Year resolutions are! Post what you are committed to doing in the year 2010!

Well, it’s that time of year again…it’s time to again celebrate Christmas! (Or at least start preparing for Christmas.)

This year’s Carolina Mountain Christmas Spectacular is called “Time for Christmas”. It takes one man’s journey, and helps us to see the true meaning of the season with all, of course, the festivities upfront that normally surround the season. The story progresses to the true reason we celebrate the season, which is the birth and life of Christ.

This year, with the beginning of the Vertical Service, and all the effort and time that has gone into the new service schedule, we’ve launched our Christmas preparation a couple of months later than normal. So beginning on October 4th, we will have auditions for those who would like to be involved in Carolina Mountain Christmas Spectacular.

I’m a person that just absolutely loves Christmas! The work and preparation seems difficult and tedious at times, but in the end, our Christmas Spectacular every year continues to amaze me. In the month of June and July, I always have Christmas music playing. My kids literally play the old Ben Crosby style of Christmas music from September all the way until April. It’s just amazing that our family has sunk into the tradition that began here 15 years ago with the launch of the foundation of what is now Carolina Mountain Christmas Spectacular.

Just to show you how much I like it, Jesse here (my administrative assistant) actually made homemade eggnog last week and it was probably the best eggnog I ever had in my whole life. Needless to say that I’m getting ready for the season and I hope you’re getting ready too!

I look forward to seeing you at auditions October 4th, and for the rehearsals and preparations that follow soon after with the restructuring of the Worship Center. We’re excited, and we’re looking forward to your part in our production. I honestly believe that every member of BBC plays a role in our Christmas production….from behind the scenes, to the acting, the singing, the playing, all the way to the person who invites their next-door-neighbor to come. So do your part. I look forward to seeing you here in the next couple of months as we work hard. Let me be the first to wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS!

P.S. Be sure to look online come October 5th for ticket sales>>

A few weeks back, I took my family to Florida, enjoying the final fleeting days of summer before the crazy schedules of fall began. Florida is a familiar place for us to visit and vacation, being that we have family there, and of course that the kid-friendly vacation opportunities are seemingly endless. However, without question, the highlight of our trip was our one-day adventure to the Magic Kingdom of Disney.

(My family with Bell)

I think Disney World holds a special place in any child’s heart. Walking through the gates of the Magic Kingdom immediately took me back to my first trip there, shortly after it opened. I felt the same wonder and enchantment as I did when I went there as a teenager. It really did bring back the child in me… don’t comment on that, please.

(Me, Lauren and Carl Brown at the Buzz Lightyear game)

Obviously, because of my creative background, I have a tendency to analyze things, specifically production opportunities. When I was young, the animated objects and sets in the Magic Kingdom seemed larger than life…they were so much bigger than they are today. Much to my surprise, some of the original rides from decades ago were still being used but now with fresher, modern appearances. The excellence Disney strives with every venue and ride throughout these thirty years ago still holds true today. There were creative areas added over the past few years to engage everyone from a seasoned Disney veteran to my one-year-old daughter. I enjoyed some of the classic rides, while my boys couldn’t get enough of the Buzz Lighyear ride in Tomorrow Land.

(Carl Brown and Jacob at the Buzzlightyear game)

(Lauren giving Minnie a peck on the cheek)

Disney World is intentional. They are a well thought-out organization that understands how to engage each and every person that walks through their gates. What is the most important focus of Disney? It is people…the individual and their experience.

My experience made me reflect on the life of our church, and I’m thrilled to be able to draw a parallel between Disney’s business philosophy, and our philosophy as a body of believers at BBC. We as a church are continuing to change and evaluate what we do with ambition in order to be relevant to today’s society. We are launching out in a continual effort to reach people…to bring Christ to every person in our sphere of influence. We know that the most important aspect of our church is not its walls or its stuff, but the people. I’m excited about being a part of a church that is willing to expand into a new adventure…Vertical Worship. I cannot wait to see what God is going to do with us and through us as we continue to invest all our efforts into engaging people who so desperately need to know Jesus Christ.

Our Vertical Worship Service>> is targeted at bringing passionate, authentic, and relevant worship to today’s generation for Christ. It is a modern movement to teach an ancient message. I’m looking forward to this new service and to the effects of it with great excitement and anticipation.

Disney knows how to love people in a world of make-believe…
We will faithfully continue to love people in the reality that Jesus Christ came to save a dying world.

I’m elated to say that we will soon be adding a new addition to our music ministry staff. Let me be the first to welcome Kenny and Susanna Kirksey from Houston, Texas. The Kirkseys have been leading worship for several years at various churches and conferences in Texas. They are the parents to two small children, ages 3 and 1. They will be joining our staff beginning Wednesday, July 22nd.

We’ve been seeking and praying fervently for several years now that we would be blessed with the Worship Associate that would be congruent with God’s plan for Biltmore Baptist Church. We believe we’ve found that person in Kenny Kirksey.

Our church has been blessed with a wonderful team already, and I anxiously await the influence that Kenny will bring to our ministries. Additional leadership is always valuable in order to allow our church to grow. In the early years, our philosophy was that you grow a church with staff, and staff-lead laity. That reasoning holds true today…that you bring in a leader, and that leader is able to lead our people to be leaders. It is a intriguing model of what Christ has commanded us to do in Matthew 28:19-20, Therefore go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you...

I’m looking forward to having the Kirksey family joining us as we follow Jesus’ commands. You will see that they are both very effective worship leaders with a prodigious amount of talent. Kenny is proficient guitar player and vocalist, and Susanna has an astonishingly unique voice. They are a great compliment to each other, and they’ll be a tremendous addition to our church as we move forward in the days ahead.

I’m really enthusiastic about what God’s going to do through the launching of our Vertical Worship Service. I anticipate these kind of exciting days …we’re going to be on the front edge…pioneers. I heard it said before at a conference that growing churches do what non-growing churches aren’t willing to do. I always want to be a church that is willing to do whatever it takes to grow the kingdom of God and to reach people for His name.

A few weeks ago, I took a team of 9 people including myself to Kenya. It was a trip filled with life-altering experiences and personally-defining moments. It’s amazing to see how happiness is so prevalent among people who are so impoverished.

Of all the unforgettable experiences that we had in Kenya, one in particular will forever remain with me…

On the fourth day of our trip, we were staying at a mission in the middle of the bush. This mission sits on about 3 acres of land, and its water pump and 3-hour electric generator serve as a refuge to many of the local people. It was our shelter for that evening, and we were cautioned to not leave the compound at night (for all the obvious reasons). However, when a runner came that afternoon to tell us that a woman was bleeding to death after giving birth, the decision to leave the safety of the compound was obvious.

We immediately assembled a small team of a pastor, a 410 Bridge employee, the only nurse on the mission compound, and myself. It took an hour to get there by truck via using bumpy, unpaved roads. The new mother waited inside her cramped hut made out of sticks, mud, and dung. The whole house was smaller than half the size of my office. There was a fire keeping water heated inside the hut, and the smoke from it penetrated every corner of the primitive home.

In a minutes’ time, the newborn was placed in my arms as the nurse went to work trying to save the mother’s life. We huddled in the hut, praying that the Lord would spare the mother’s life. Within an hour, God’s grace and healing materialized, and the mother’s bleeding stopped.

The next thing that happened astounded me. After the baby was given a clean bill of health, the nurse asked for the baby’s name. She replied that he didn’t have a name yet, and asked our small team to choose his name. I thought they were all teasing with me when the nurse suggested “Carl”. The ladies in the hut started giggling, but soon they were calling the newborn “Baby Carl”. I realized that from that moment on the little boy, nestled thousands of miles away in a completely different lifestyle and culture, will carry my name for life.

As we walked away from the remote hut to return to the mission, I was overwhelmed with the privilege God blessed me with on that day. It still amazes me that a woman, who met me for a brief moment of time, would honor me in as great a way as she did.

I went to Kenya because I thought they needed me, but I came back knowing that I need them.

This past week I had the traumatic occasion of being able to see my oldest son, my very first son, graduate from high school. It was again another reminder that time flies so fast, so quick, and that we need to make the best of every moment that we have. Preparing for that special day this past week brought a number of emotions to Michelle and I. As we looked back through childhood pictures of Carl Brown, those days seemed so recent, yet are so far away. The realization is that we need to make the most of every minute that we have, and every day that we have, because we can never go back and get it.

What I learned this week is something that I want each one of you to learn. I know each one of you have your own illustration of how time flies...all of you know exactly what I'm talking about. Let this be a gentle reminder today to make the most of every moment you have, and realize that you can't go back and get it. Make a memory today. Make a difference in someone's life today. Make an internal mark on the lives of the people who surround you, because you'll never regret that time you spend and that investment you made. I look forward to seeing you this week. I honestly believe that every time we meet together honors God and lift Him up. Let's worship out loud!

This past Wednesday in Kenya, I received a text from my wife that totally shocked me...it took me by surprise. The text simply said "I hate to share the news with you, but Andy DeLong passed away". Andy was a good friend, one of the very first people in the Exalt Ministry, and a dad of two in his 40's. Sitting half a world away, the emotions were hard; the impact was more than I can even tell you. I had no outlet...I couldn't visit, I couldn't see Cheryl, I couldn't talk with the kids.

During the mission trip, the life lessons were many, but probably no more impactful that made me examine my own life. I realized that Andy was really about my same age and we had a lot of similar qualities. He was a musician who loved life and was fun to be around. He was successful, and someone everyone really liked. He was just so committed. Many times we ask the question "why?", but scripture says that we shouldn’t lean on our own understanding; we should acknowledge Him and trust Him. That’s the scripture I hold for the whole situation with Andy and with his family. I sometimes don’t need to know all the answers. It brings to light a scripture that I think we should all be reminded of….Psalm 39:4-6. Verse 6 says “Man is just a mere vapor as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it.”

What we need to realize is that our importance in life is not what we can accumulate….it’s what we can give away…what impact we can leave with someone. What I will remember most about Andy was not his accumulations or business success. What I remember most is his love of life…his smile, his skill given to God, his dependability, his integrity, his love for the Lord…really all the things that matter in this life…and eternity. Let the life of one be an investment to all. We love the DeLongs. Continue to pray & be there to support them.

I'm bringing my second blog to you from Kenya, Africa. Over the past week we have been able to travel to three different regions of Kenya, spending most of the time in an outlining remote area called Segera. Most of the people there have stick and mud type dwellings. A typical family would live in a 10x10 hut with 6-7 people. I was amazed to see how kind and loving these people were with just so little worldly possessions...litterally looking for the very next meal. Every time I came to a home, people invited me...they were very proud of what they had. Its been said that Kenya needs America influence, but I would honestly say that America needs Kenya (or Africa) influence. In the US we see people who are poor and/or hurting, but seeing it at another level, I grow to realize that no one in America is truely poor because we have so much more availability and potential. Our team has learned many life lessons this week that we'll be able to share in the upcoming weeks, months, and years ahead. My prayer is that what we experienced, you would be able to draw from as well.

My heart and love goes out to the DeLong family...Andy was one of our very first orchestra members when I came to this church 15 years ago. Incredible talent, a man who loved the Lord....wherever Andy was there was always a lot of fun. He was unwaiveringly faithful to the ministry of Biltmore Baptist and Exalt. I know that from this point on his family needs our love, our care, our attention, and our touch. Continue your prayers, but my desire is that our prayers will turn to action.

In wrappping up this blog from the other side of the world, I am thankful for you, and I am looking forward to sharing with you back in the states in the next few days. Continue to worship out loud!

Ok…I am starting my very first blog. I’m not real sure what you all want to talk about, but I’m just going to tell you a little bit about what’s going on in my life, and hopefully once a week we’ll update this.

Life hands you a bunch of changes sometimes when you’re not quite ready for them, and right now we have a brand new baby girl who is a year old. We’ve had some beautiful experiences with her and my four boys…man, I sure do pity the guy who dates her for the first time!
On the other end of the spectrum is my dad, whose enduring some difficult health. It’s hard when you walk into a hospital room and your dad, your boyhood hero, doesn’t know you. It really makes you evaluate what’s important in life…

Speaking of what’s important, we’re about to leave to go into a very remote part of Kenya to do missionary work. Ten of us are going…9 from BBC and 1 from the group 410Bridge. I know that every time you go abroad you understand how much we who live in this country are so rich. I heard it said one time that if you even have a car (not necessarily one that works, just a car in general) that you are in the top 7% economically of all people in the world. So know that going to Kenya is going to strengthen the value that “happiness doesn’t come from the stuff, but from within”. Of course we know that it’s the love that God has for us, and we all ought to be so joyful because the true source of joy within us, and that’s the person of Jesus Christ.

I look forward to sharing with you what I gain from this experience. My next blog will come from Kenya, so be sure to check back soon. My challenge to you is that each and every day you need to live out loud for God!
